THE HAGUE, April 30 (Xinhua) -- A majority of Dutch citizens view the United States as a threat to global security and support reducing Europe's dependence on Washington, according to a survey released on Tuesday by the Netherlands' Atlantic Commission and research firm Verian.
The annual NATO Support Monitor reveals that 88 percent of Dutch respondents believe Europe should pursue a more autonomous defense strategy and reduce its reliance on the U.S. within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
When asked whether the U.S. is more of a threat or a guarantee of safety, 65 percent said they regard the country more as a danger to the world.
The survey finds that Dutch citizens' confidence in the U.S. as a reliable ally has declined, with growing distrust toward Washington's role in the world. "There are strong doubts about the contribution of the U.S. to security in Europe and about its role in the world," it says.
The survey also shows that the Dutch public is optimistic about Europe's potential to take greater responsibility for its own defense. ■
