Macao's composite CPI edges up year-on-year in May

MACAO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Macao's composite consumer price index rose 0.19 percent year-on-year in May and fell 0.05 percent from April, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) of the Macao Special Administrative Region reported on Friday.

As for sections closely linked to everyday living, prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 0.21 percent due to increased dining-out and takeaway expenses, the DSEC said. Rental increases also led to a 0.13 percent rise in the housing and fuels category, while the recreation, sport and culture index saw a notable 4.14 percent annual uptick.

The DSEC added that the drop from April was driven by lower prices for fruits, seafood and edible oils, as well as declines in airfares, hotel rates, and tour packages following Easter. Conversely, increases were seen in clothing and footwear, as well as household furnishings and services. ■
